The actual skating day happened Dec 31, when our friends Suzanne, Paul and Sam surprized us with a visit (all the way from Midland, Ontario). We had a great day skating, enjoyed staying up 'til midnight, and then went swimming the next day at the super-duper Walnut Grove pool.
Sorry, somehow Suzanne avoided the camera for the 2 seconds that we had it out - I'll try to get some photos from them 
later!
